Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry says Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate had a big influence on his career.

"Gareth was a massive influence on me when he was at Villa because he was very encouraging with the younger players at the club," Barry told Villa's website.

"Any youngster at that time looked up to Gareth because of his impressive career with both Villa and England.

"He was a superb professional, both on and off the field and he was a real role model to me when I was trying to make my name in the game."
