Villa boss O'Neill: Lerner knows we must expand squad in summer market

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is confident of the support in the summer market from chairman Randy Lerner so this week's UEFA Cup selection dilemma is not repeated.

Villa owner Lerner spent 48 hours in Russia to watch the game and was as disappointed as the 250 travelling fans about the result.

The American, who has already pumped £100million of his own cash into the club, is ready to bankroll his manager again.

O'Neill said: "I'd have no question that Randy has the same dream as every Villa fan and myself.

"You look at Manchester United and the size of their squad. It'd be fantastic to be in that sort of position.

"Gone are the days when 14 players could go and win a championship.

"I'd hope this is the last time I have to do this. I've told people what happened and not everyone appreciates it. I understand that."
