Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is backing Gabby Agbonlahor for an England recall.

Agbonlahor has not pulled on an England shirt for three years.

Lambert claimed: "Every young lad has the ambition to play for their national team and I'm sure Gabby is the same.

"You hit your peak in your late twenties and Gabby has just turned 26, so his best years are to come.

"He should be looking to get into the England squad because he's been great since I came here.

"When a new manager comes in everybody thinks it's a fresh start and he was playing exceptionally well in America on our pre-season tour until he hurt his knee.

"But since he's come back in he's been excellent and he took his goal brilliantly against Sunderland last week."
