Villa to be active in January transfer window

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert will enter the January transfer market after seeing the midlanders pick up only six points from nine games, their worst start for 43 years. "The squad needs to get bigger. Everyone has to have competition for places," said Lambert.

Lambert has several experienced players out, with four centre-backs on the injury list.

"It shows you are short in certain areas and you have to improve the squad which we will try to do," he added.

"This was never going to happen overnight," he said. "A lot of people just expected us to come in and see a real change in fortunes.

"There is certainly progress, you can see that, but you want to keep going until you think, 'We're there'."
