Vertonghen keen to discuss Spurs extension

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is keen to talk to the club about extending his contract.

The Belgian central defender is buoyed by the arrival of Jose Mourinho, who has always favoured experience in defence.

Sky Sports says the change has triggered Vertonghen to seek renewed talks about his future at the club.

The 32-year-old is one of the longest-serving players at the club, having played almost 300 games in all competitions since arriving in 2012.

He is a key member of the first team when fit, forming a central defensive partnership with compatriot Toby Alderweireld.

Signing Vertonghen and Alderweireld to new deals would allow Mourinho to focus the club's transfer funds on other areas of the pitch.
