Vermaelen preferring to stay quiet on Arsenal situation

Thomas Vermaelen admits he would rather stay quiet regarding his current situation at Arsenal.

The Belgian defender, who was once the Gunners captain, is struggling for game time this season with Arsene Wenger opting to use Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in central defence.

Vermaelen recently said he would stay and fight for his spot at the Emirates Stadium but while in Belgium camp, he was quizzed again on his position and preferred to remain calm.

"I don't want to speak about the situation because if I do I make it worse, so I don't want to speak. It is not about my situation it is about the team and they are doing well, it is not about me," he said.

Vermaelen was called in for Sunday's 1-0 loss to Manchester United after Mertesacker pulled out with illness and admitted it was a thrill to simply play for the Gunners again.

"Of course you want to play as much as you can, so I was really happy to play on Sunday," he added.
