Venables says Arsenal midfielder Wilshere, Carroll should skip U21 Euros

Former England boss Terry Venables says Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere and Liverpool's Andy Carroll should not be considered for the U21 Euros.

In his column for The Sun, Venables wrote: "In an era when so many young stars lose touch with reality and are driven by finance rather than football, it is very refreshing to hear the hottest prospect in Fabio Capello's senior squad saying he wants to play for Stuart Pearce's "Young Lions at their European Championships.

Gazza was the same. If there was a match, he'd want to play in it. He'd have played for the schoolboys had I let him!

"Wilshere, bursting with youthful exuberance and enthusiasm, is clearly in the same mould.

"But however worthy his desire to return to Under-21 duty at the end of what has been a landmark season for him, he must not be allowed to.

"The same applies to Andy Carroll.

"In the long run, selecting them could be seriously damaging to their careers, to England's hopes of success at the 2012 European Championships and to the development of even younger stars."
