Varney tension increases as Derby fire back at Blackpool

Derby County say Blackpool do not have an exclusive agreement in place to sign striker Luke Varney on a permanent basis in January.

Seasiders boss Ian Holloway claimed on Monday his side have a £250,000 deal only available to them in the new year to purchase the 27-year-old, who is currently on a season-long loan at Bloomfield Road and has so far netted four goals in 11 appearances.

However, a Rams club spokesman told the Derby Telegraph: "Just to clarify the situation with Luke Varney's future, contrary to what has been reported in the national press there is no clause in the current loan deal which allows Blackpool exclusive access to sign the player permanently in January.

"Luke can be sold to any club during the next transfer window with no specification on the price of any potential transfer.

"Hopefully, this will dispel any future confusion regarding the matter."
