Valeri hoping Sassuolo can stave off relegation

Carl Valeri hopes that his club side Sassuolo can avoid relegation from Italy's Serie B this season.

The midfielder was this week selected in Holger Osieck's Australia squad for upcoming friendlies with New Zealand and Serbia but may have to withdraw if Sassuolo are drawn into either fourth or fifth bottom on the table for a relegation playoff.

But Valeri is confident that he will be there for the Socceroos as he is confident that Sassuolo can get at least a point against fifth-placed Reggina this weekend.

"I think we can stay clear of a playoff, but if we did get drawn in it would leave me in a tough position regarding the Socceroos games in June,'' Valeri told SBS.

''I've missed a lot of football with my club this year and the potential clash of fixtures is not something I really want to think about.

''It would be a hard call for all concerned and not something I'd want to make.

"I really want to be back in Australia for those games and that's what I'm aiming at.''
