Valencia hero Guillot exclusive: LaLiga players convinced Man Utd legend Best joining Real Madrid

Valencia hero Vicente Guillot says George Best and his exploits with Manchester United were a regular topic of conversation inside LaLiga dressing rooms.

One of the great entertainers of his generation, Guillot played over 150 games for Valencia, where his popularity generated a fans' club, known as the 'Guillotistas'.

A diminutive winger boasting great pace and dribbling ability, Guillot was at the forefront of a golden age for Los Che. During his time with VCF, the attacker won the Copa del Rey and two Fairs Cups.

And given his style of game, it's no surprise that Guillot followed Best's progress with United in England and Europe.

Speaking with Tribalfootball.com, Guillot says Best's performances for Sir Matt Busby's United had him greatly admired across and inside the Spanish game. No-one was in doubt about the ability and style of United's great No7.

He recalled: "Yes, without a shadow of a doubt. George Best was undoubtedly admired by players in my time. He was a 'grandissimo' footballer. He was a winger and an attacking midfielder. I think he played out on the right."

Indeed, such was the profile of Best amongst his peers in Spain that Guillot says there was a belief that he would eventually be leaving United for Real Madrid.

He continued: "I heard that Real Madrid were after him for a while and were close to signing him. You heard a lot about George Best in those days. So, when you hear a lot about a particular player it's a) because they are a very good footballer or b) they are a very bad person! (Laughs).

"The middle ground doesn't exist here!"
