Valencia coach Baraja unhappy being blocked from youth selection for Copa

Valencia coach Ruben Baraja is frustrated being prevented from playing a team of young players in the Copa del Rey.

Valencia meet Logrones on Thursday night, but federation restrictions mean Baraja cannot field XI youngsters.

He said, "I think we have to approach the Copa del Rey thinking that it is an opportunity for the players who are not having the run of games that they need. They need to get quality minutes in competition and we will try to do that, so that the team remain competitive. This is the message I want to convey to them. For us, the Copa del Rey is a historically important competition for Valencia CF -and it is also important for me, in the sense that I value it a lot.

"They are going to have the opportunity to have minutes, grow, show the coach that they can participate more or that the coach is making a mistake in leaving them out. I see it as an opportunity in which we have to try to choose the team well and get through the round. It is our obligation to go through.

"In goal, there are different options and Jaume could be one of them. What we have in mind is for him to start.

"The regulations don't make sense. It is absurd that you cannot field 11 young players if you want to boost your youth team so that they have minutes. I don't know why the rule hasn't been changed yet. In the situation we are in, it hurts us, because I would like to have more space to use players in the game tomorrow.

"However, we will try to field a combination between the first team and those who are registered for VCF Mestalla, with the plan being to do things well and compete. We must understand that we represent a club that historically has always given a lot of importance to the Copa del Rey, and tomorrow we have to approach the game with that mentality. Furthermore, we are going to face opponents who, if you don't play them with that mentality, with that conviction and the idea of competing well, you could suffer disappointment. This would not be the first time that has happened and we have to avoid that."
