Udinese striker Antonio di Natale was full of pride after leading Italy to last night's friendly win over Sweden.
Di Natale said: “I was very pleased to wear the armband and it’s the greatest thing I have achieved as a player. It was a wonderful night and everyone was happy.
“The Coach has always given me the chance to play, I tried to do my best at club and international level. I hope to carry on like this and be one of the 23 in South Africa.”
Di Natale is currently top scorer in Serie A and proved his versatility again tonight in Cesena.
“In the second half I played wide of a 4-4-2 and it went well. It was a memorable evening and an honour to be captain of Italy.
“Playing closer to the striker gives me more of a chance to approach the goal, but I have been playing in a 4-3-3 for many years and so whatever the Coach needs is fine.”
