Turkish crisis as Ankaragucu president Koca attacks ref

Turkish football is in crisis after Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca punched ref Halil Umut Meler after the final whistle of their draw with Rizespor.

Meler fell to the turf after being punched in the face. Others then laid into him with a series of kicks as he curled up on the ground covering his face.

Players, coaching staff and security then raced to the scene and stopped the attack and lead Meler to safety.

The match finished 1-1 after Rizespor equalised in the 97th minute a minute before fulltime.

Erdogan later said: "Sports means peace and brotherhood. Sport is incompatible with violence. We will never allow violence to take place in Turkish sports."
