Tottenham wing-back Ryan Sessegnon says competition with Ivan Perisic is pushing him to new levels.

With Perisic to compete with for the left wing-back spot, the 22-year-old has made six starts for Tottenham this season but has still come on early in games when he has been a substitute.

"For me to play as many games as l can this year, I had to go away and work on myself. If you want to improve, no one is going to do that for you. You have to do that for yourself and that's what l wanted to do," said Sessegnon in the club's official matchday programme ahead of the Everton game.

"In terms of the work I have been doing away from the club, I worked on the physical side, just making sure that my body was ready to play as many games as possible this season. And mentally as well, (with the injuries) it hasn't been easy. So, I worked on that, the mental side of the game, as well.

"When I am called upon this season, l just want to give consistent performances for the team and that is my biggest challenge going forward throughout this year. You don't want to be a ten out of ten one game and a five the next. You want to keep that consistency in yourself and that's what I'm trying to do."

Enjoying some highs already this season following a number of impressive performances, Sessegnon isn't getting carried away and is instead remaining focused on his game.

"In football there are ups and downs but, when you have downs, it's about how you keep focused and keep doing the things which have got you to where you are," explained the left wing-back.

"We're in a good position in the league. Obviously, there are a lot of games coming up, important games, but we know what we have to do. We know our strengths, we know we have to improve in aspects and it is just about keeping going.

"For me, l just have to keep going, keep looking at my game and keep trying to improve and the rewards will come."
