Tottenham's Redknapp backs Campbell to succeed with Man Utd

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp believes Sol Campbell can make a similar impact to what former Sweden striker Henrik Larsson made at Manchester United.

With news that the Red Devils are reportedly interested in the ex-England defender circulating, Redknapp wrote in his column for The Sun that the move would not be as bad as many people think.

35-year old Campbell walked away from a lucrative five-year deal with League Two outfit Notts County earlier this season and is currently a free agent looking for a new club.

He is aware of United's interest and has spoken of his desire to join the English champions and Redknapp believes that the former Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth centre-half would be a great acquisition to Sir Alex Ferguson's squad.

'Sol Campbell can do at the back what Henrik Larsson did up front for Manchester United two years ago,' Redknapp's column read.

'Campbell can prove, as Swedish star Larsson did, that he still has the quality to play at the very highest level and I'm not surprised at the reports tipping him for a Premier League return.

'….It worked out brilliantly as Larsson scored on his debut against Aston Villa in the FA Cup and then against Watford in the league during his three-month stay.

'United went on to win the Premier League title that season, two months after Larsson, now 37, went home to Sweden with Sir Alex full of praise for the way he handled himself.'

Redknapp wrote of United's current defensive problems and said Campbell would be a great person to bolster the club in that area.

'With United now having problems with the fitness of key defenders like Jonny Evans, Rio Ferdinand and John O'Shea, it has a familiar ring about the Larsson situation to it.'
