Tottenham now slump in Europe

Tottenham's season continues to lurch from crisis to crisis as they lose the opening game in Uefa Cup Group D 2-0 at Udinese. Spurs boss Juande Ramos has won this competition twice in the last three seasons with Sevilla but it all started to unravel for the North London outfit following a mistake from keeper Heurelho Gomes.

He failed to clear a backpass then fouled Fabio Quagliarella - and Antonio Di Natale scored the resulting penalty.

Early in the second half Tottenham's misery was compounded with the dismissal of Jamie O'Hara for a second bookable offence within the space of a minute.

Darren Bent almost gave the ten men of White Hart Lane an unlikely equaliser until a late strike from Simone Pepe sealed the win for Udinese.

Ramos, who has the dubious distinction of leading Tottenham into the worst start to a season in their history, said: "I'm very angry because I don't like to lose. We lost this match in this competition and now we have to win matches to qualify for the next stage.

"In the first half we played okay but our goalkeeper made a mistake that turned the game totally in the wrong direction for us.

"If there was no mistake from Gomes, if we scored the first goal, things would have been different.

"Of course this type of mistake can always happen, this is part of football. I still have to support my players and defend them."

Ramos now has to lift his players for Bolton after yet another defeat.

"The situation is not very comfortable," he said. "At this moment (morale) in the dressing room is not in a normal situation but they know it's possible to win in football and it's possible to lose."
