Tottenham defender Steven Caulker values the time he spent away on-loan.

He spent three years out on loan, moving a division higher each time. He has more than 100 League games under his belt already.

"Going to Yeovil at the age of 17 was the start of everything," Caulker told the Sunday Express.

"I was given the chance and I was able to build my career.

"Getting the experience of League games helps so much, playing in matches that matter to the crowds who are watching.

"I jumped at it. There wasn't a moment's hesitation. Yeovil played in the same division as Brentford, so I knew what was coming. I'd grown up with that level.

"I enjoyed Bristol City, too, and I felt that playing at Swansea last season was the real test for me. Could I do it in the Premier League? Could I play under the big spotlight?

"Their manager, Brendan Rodgers, was very persuasive, and he pulled me aside more than a few times and taught me about what he wanted.

"The main thing was to be composed on the ball. He improved me tremendously in that area, getting me to play out from the back. He would watch the videos with me and show where and how I could make passes.

"It was intimidating at the start to be told you had to pass the ball out and must not kick it long. The first game was away to Manchester City, and I had to do it with Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko chasing around me.

"Of course that was frightening as a teenager making a Premier League debut. But Brendan was so inspirational. He gave so much confidence to us as players, so we did it. He believed in us.

"I really enjoy that style and it's very similar to the way Tottenham play. Coming into the side at Spurs this season, I've been able to get on the ball and feel comfortable."
