Tottenham defender Sebastien Bassong admits it was an agonising decision to declare his international future to Cameroon.
He played twice for France's Under-21s but, as they were not competitive games, he was able to play for Cameroon.
Bassong told The Sun: "It was quite difficult.
"I used to play for the France Under-21s but when your heart is in something, you have to do it.
"I spoke about it with my parents. My mum said do what you want but my dad pushed me towards Cameroon. In the end, though, it was my decision.
"Everything around football in Africa is crazy.
"When I first played for Cameroon, I received small gifts from the fans, even a small statue of myself from someone who had made it for me."
