Tottenham boss Postecoglou laughs off 'chequebook manager' claims

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has scoffed at claims of being a chequebook manager.

Spurs were the Premier League's big spenders in January with the arrivals of Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner.

But Postecoglou joked: "In the smallest spending window? There's a bit of context there. Come on mate, don't tell me I've bought my way to the top!

"Yeah, look, I think all those things are an advantage but whether you have got one pound or a million it's how you spend it, I really do think that.

"I have no issue with clubs that spend a lot of money if they get it right - good on them. Whatever you've got you want to invest it wisely whether it's a limitless amount or a finite amount - which there is now. We are all finding out that you can't just spend. For us we have done a good job strategically because part of the brief from my perspective anyway was to do it early.

"That was really important. I know people dismiss that aspect of it but if we hadn't had Timo and even Radu over the last three weeks and dropped games we wouldn't be in the position we are. Maybe you are right, maybe because of the lack of activity it allowed us to do that early but I still think we were pretty smart about in terms of the targets we identified. Is there an opportunity? I think there is always an opportunity, it's how you embrace and take it."
