Alan Thompson is being linked with a return to Newcastle United after announcing his retirement yesterday.

The Evening Chronicle says United are keen on bringing Thompson back to Tyneside in a coaching capacity.

And his retirement means the Magpies' hierarchy are clear to starting talking to the Geordie. Thompson is expected to join the Academy as a member of the coaching staff later in the summer.
