Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen is on his way to Roma.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti confirmed his interest in the Belgian yesterday.

And Sport says Vermaelen is set to join Roma on a season-long loan for the 2016/17 campaign.

Former Arsenal team-mate Wojciech Szczesny, who has rejoined Roma on-loan for a second consecutive season, spoke highly of Vermaelen's pending transfer.

"Vermaelen is a great player but I haven't spoken to him much since leaving Arsenal," said the Pole, "Having him here [at Roma] would be positive."
