Syria cause upset with win over Saudi Arabia

Syria have recorded an upset 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in Group B of the 2011 Asian Cup.

The Syrians, ranked 109 in the world, had never beaten the 81st-ranked Saudis in four previous meetings but it looked good for them to break their drought when Abdelrazaq Al Husein struck from inside the area in the 38th minute.

Saudi Arabia hit back on the hour-mark through Taisir Al Jassim headed home after a corner was only cleared as far as him on the edge of the box.

But three minutes later, Al Husein grabbed his second with a strong first-time shot that deflected in to make it 2-1.

Syria were able to hold out the Saudis for the remainder of the contest to kickstart their cup campaign in fine fashion.

They next meet Japan, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Jordan, whilst Saudi Arabia take on the Jordanians in Al Rayyan.
