Swansea's Monk backing Shelvey to rein it in against old boys Liverpool

Garry Monk believes Jonjo Shelvey is capable of further improvement with Swansea City.

The midfielder, 22, has been with the Swans since arriving from Liverpool in 2013 and often shows just glimmers of what he is capable of.

According to Monk, Shelvey is beginning to add consistency to his big bag of tricks and has urged him to keep it simple against his old club on Monday night after some below par performances against the Reds, notably when giving away two goals last season before receiving a ban for an elbow on Emre Can in December.

"Jonjo always seems to grab the headlines against Liverpool, let's hope he does it for the right reasons," said Monk ahead of the Liberty Stadium fixture.

"Jonjo's in good form and has had a very good month, showing bits of what we know he can do and what we're pushing Jonjo to do.

"He's knuckled down and shown a real good level of performance, now he must make sure he finishes the season as strong as possible.

"Whenever you play against a former club you are probably highlighted that bit more. We know he's really fond of that club, he always wants to show what he can do and hopefully he can do that on the night."
