Sunderland spree means Bruce must cull squad

Sunderland's spending spree must be countered by a cull of their squad to fit in with Premier League squad limits.

The Daily Mail says the challenge is to trim a squad which, with its promising youngsters from Kevin Ball's academy squad, now exceeds 30.

There are players on handsome salaries inherited from Roy Keane who were surplus to requirements before the 10 confirmed new arrivals. And any offers for players like George McCartney, Nyron Nosworthy and Matt Kilgallon will be snapped up.

Craig Gordon and Steed Malbranque both have a year left on their deals, with no prospect of talks or new contracts, and Kieran Richardson and Anton Ferdinand may also be packing their boxes at home before the end of August.
