Gus Poyet believes Sunderland will need a miracle to remain in the Premier League.
The Black Cats were beaten 5-1 by Tottenham on Monday night, despite scoring the first goal, which sees them rooted to the bottom of the table with just seven fixtures remaining.
Sunderland find themselves seven points from safety after the White Hart Lane disappointment which suggests to their boss that perhaps it will be a struggle to avoid relegation this campaign.
"It's definitely more difficult," the Uruguayan told Sky Sports.
"We need a miracle, probably. We need something very unique. If not, it's going to be practically impossible."
Of the poor performance, Poyet added: "It's very hard to take. It's not nice. I imagine how hard it is for the fans who have travelled.
"There is no place to hide. I am responsible, because I am in charge, and I will accept full responsibility."
