Everton have recalled Ellis Simms from his loan at Sunderland.

Sunderland sports director Kristjaan Speakman admits there's frustration with Everton's decision.

"Ellis' return to Merseyside is a big disappointment to us because of the joint progress he and the club have made this season," he said.

"Unfortunately, loans are so when successful, but this is proof of Tony (Mowbray, manager) and the other staff - and of course Ellis - that Everton feels, that he is ready to continue his immediate development in a Premier League environment."

Sunderland sit in fourth place in the Championship.
