Sunderland edge Newcastle after 28 years

Sunderland boss Roy Keane he felt his side deserved the 2-1 victory over local rivals Newcastle at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats finally ended the 28 year record of not having beaten the Toon on home soil for over quarter of a century.

Keane told Sky Sports: "It is great and I thought we deserved it. I thought we played some good stuff and we should have scored one or two more."

Djibril Cisse opened the scoring before Shola Amoebi restored parity.

However, Kieran Richardson second half free kick sealed victory.

Keane paid tribute to his team's hard work, "I did remind the players it's a game of football and if we do the right things and work our socks off we will get our rewards and I thought we did that."

With the scores level in the second half, Keane introduced Kenwyn Jones which he admitted was something of a gamble.

"It's been a while since we beat Newcastle. Sometimes you have to take a risk to win games. It nearly cost us because we were pretty open at the back," admitted the Irishman before adding, "It worked out in the end and it's credit to the players for that."

Keane hoped the trouble in the stands at the final whistle wouldn't overshadow the result.

"We will have to wait and see. Hopefully it won't take away from what the players achieved today," before concluding, "These things happen. No one wants to see supporters on the football pitch."
