Sunderland chairman reveals unique player pay structure

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has revealed how the players' wages are affected by their League position.

Quinn has injected a performance related system, with players rewarded for success, and paid less for failure.

"We give good bonuses," said Quinn. "We try to structure our pay on incentive-based bonuses.

"We have a safety net. Players see that. We're making the right steps.

"When we took over, our revenue was about £25million. This year it is £70m. That gives you an idea (of the difference promotion has made). Our debt is controlled and managed. Our wage bill depends on how we do."
