Sunderland chairman Quinn: Jones could have been our Carroll

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn admits they had their own Andy Carroll - but let him go.

Carroll's emergence suggests the old-fashioned number nine is back in fashion. Steve Bruce had one, but sold him.

"Yeah, (Stoke City striker) Kenwyne (Jones)," Quinn acknowledged to The Journal. "We thought we had it with him but for some reason it just went off the boil. We hope we can find someone with Kenwyne's ability who buys into the passion and puts his body on the line every time he plays for us. Carroll terrorised teams and how many times did we hear pundits saying he was unplayable? That's what they can offer. There is so little time on the ball but if the player is smart enough and can bring others into play that is a big addition.

"You can see the profile of players we have here. We know it's not about piling a load of players together to get one good season out of them for all to disappear and fall down the drain. It is somebody who won't be here at the tail-end of his career."
