Sunderland boss Bruce: Man Utd legend Cantona best I played with

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce says Manchester United legend Eric Cantona was the best player he played with.

Bruce spoke of King Eric at a recent fans function.

He told safc.com: "Well, I played with some fantastic individuals: Bryan Robson, Ryan Giggs and many others but the one who stands out was Cantona.

"He was such a mercurial character and he could do things with football that very few other people could."

Cantona courted controversy throughout his time in Manchester and aside from inspiring Alex Ferguson's team on a regular basis, the striker is remembered by many for his infamous 'kung-fu kick' on a Crystal Palace supporter at Selhurst park.

Remembering the ensuing events after full time on that day Bruce said: "It was all going off in the dressing room at Selhurst after that. There were crowds of people everywhere, police dogs and helicopters, you name it, it was happening.

"We'd all come off the pitch and Eric was in the shower and we knew what was going on outside. We were obviously concerned about him considering what had happened.

"Eric appeared out of the shower with this massive cut on his back where he'd hit the advertising board and I just said 'Are you alright Eric?' and he looked up at me and said 'I think I'm in a bit of trouble here.

"I said 'trouble? I think you're in a bit more than that son.' "
