Sunderland academy in disarray as Wigan open Welsh talks

Wigan Athletic have entered talks with Sunderland coach Andy Welsh.

The Sun says Welsh, 54, has been in charge of the Black Cats Under-23s side since Robbie Stockdale was promoted to first-team duties last year.

But the ex-Manchester City academy boss is on the brink of leaving the Stadium of Light to link up with Latics chief Warren Joyce, who he assisted at Royal Antwerp ten years ago.

News of Welsh's potential departure comes on the same day Sunderland announced that long-serving academy manager Ged McNamee is quitting the club.

And it will leave the Black Cats youth set-up in disarray, with assistant academy boss Danny Philpott having also been placed on gardening leave in September.
