Stoke were offered Portsmouth keeper James

Stoke City turned down the chance to sign Portsmouth goalkeeper David James yesterday.

The Sentinel says Portsmouth were understood to want to remove the 39-year-old keeper from their wage bill as part of the club's on-going re-structuring.

But any chance of a deal with Stoke was thwarted by time constraints and the likelihood of excessive personal terms.
