Stoke City striker Jonathan Walters has defended his scoring record.

Walters bagged two on the final day against Bolton, but still ended up with only 11 goals - including six penalties - from 49 starts and a further five appearances from the substitutes bench.

"Probably half of the games I've played on the left or right," he argued.

"Even when I'm up front, I generally spend most of my time playing in midfield. I've actually been told to play in central midfield.

"You still try to break forward ahead of Peter Crouch, and people look at you making runs and they say 'oh he's playing up front, he should be getting goals'.

"If you're classed as a striker and you don't get many goals, you'll get criticised. I did have a good few chances against Newcastle and I know I should have done better, and that gets highlighted.

"I know what I can do and so does the manager."
