The pair are set to face eachother at Wembley as England host Scotland.
"On and off the pitch, he is one of the real gentlemen in the game," insisted the 27-year-old, who could be set to play a key role at Wembley.
"I was fortunate enough to share a dressing room with him and to see him at close-quarters. It was an honour to play beside him.
"He is the best I've played beside, without a shadow of a doubt. He is probably one of the top players in the Premier League over the past 10 years.
"There was a full house at his testimonial the other week and everybody at Liverpool adores him.
"Most importantly, he is a nice guy."
