Steve Watson has message for next Newcastle manager: Don't be Gullit!

Steve Watson says Newcastle United's next manager must be respectful of the club's culture.

Watson was on the black-and-white roller-coaster between 1992 and 1997 when Kevin Keegan took the club from the brink of relegation to the old Third Division to within a whisker of being crowned champions of England.

"It sounds easy to say, but the only time you truly believed in that dressing room when Keegan talked," Watson told the Evening Chronicle.

"He wasn't trying to sell anything. He was so positive and buoyant you just went to battle for him. I believed everything he said, he didn't try to change much.

"You could tell he was buzzing, he was joining in training and that was more important to say when Ruud Gullit came in.

"Gullit sold me.

"Gullit came in and thought he could change the whole ethos of Newcastle United.

"If you are going to be successful at Newcastle, you have to embrace the city and the fans. You can't come in and say you are going to sell everybody and do your own thing.

"You just can't do that in Newcastle."
