Spurs target Young emerges as first Houllier task at Villa

Aston Villa winger Ashley Young remains a top target for Tottenham.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp attempted to sign Young during the summer but a swap deal involving Robbie Keane could not be agreed once Martin O'Neill departed.

Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier is due to replace O'Neill on Wednesday and his first role could be to persuade the England international to stay at the club.

Tottenham are willing to pay £22m for Young - with Ireland captain Keane and Jermain Jenas used as possible make weights in the deal.

Young could be tempted by the lure of Champions League football and improving his current £65,000-a-week salary.
