Spurs boss Pochettino: English players now cheating like ‘Latin people’

Mauricio Pochettino believes English players these days are influenced more by the South American and European culture than in the past.

The Tottenham Hotspur manager was responding to claims that Dele Alli dived to win a penalty for his side in Saturday's 5-0 victory over Swansea City.

Alli went down under minimal contact from Kyle Naughton in the first half with Harry Kane stepping up to convert form the spot.

Pochettino was at the centre of another penalty scandal as a player when he allegedly fouled Michael Owen to give England a penalty against Argentina at the 2002 World Cup.

The Argentine suggested that perhaps players from England are now longer 'pure' like they once were.

"It was 15 years ago when Owen dived," Pochettino told Sky Sports.

"Don't believe that English football is fair play always because Owen jumped like he was in a swimming pool. Come on. I didn't touch him. I promise you. It's true.

"I think today football is more global. England is more like European football. Now we have the influence of the Latin people that try to cheat always.

"Maybe you were more pure 20, 25, 30 years ago. Now you are like us."
