Virgil van Dijk is giving Southampton boss Claude Puel a headache ahead of this week's EFL Cup semi-final second leg.

The Dutch centre-half limped out of Sunday's 3-0 win over Leicester City with an ankle injury and had a scan on Monday.

Van Dijk is in doubt for Wednesday night's return bout against Liverpool at Anfield but Puel will give his star defender every chance of proving his fitness.

"For van Dijk he has had a scan and I await the result," Puel said.

"For the moment I don't know the situation. It's a good kick on his ankle and he cannot continue the game against Leicester for example.

"I think it's not serious but I don't know if he can participate for this game. We will see for the next day before the game."

The Saints lead 1-0 following their first leg triumph at St Mary's about a fortnight ago.
