Southampton's Targett on verge of new deal as Chelsea circle

Southampton are looking to tie down promising defender Matt Targett to a new deal.

The 19-year old left-back made just his second start for the Saints in their 2-1 Capital One Cup victory over Arsenal on Wednesday night but is already being seen as a successor to Luke Shaw who left for Manchester United in the summer.

It is believed that Chelsea, among other Premier League clubs, are showing significant interest in Targett but his agent suggests a new contract at the St Mary's Stadium is forthcoming.

"We are in discussions over a new contract. He is in the right place," said Targett's representative Leon Callender.

Targett has been with the Saints since he joined the south coast club's famed youth academy in 2003. He has played for Scotland at U19 level before electing to represent England in both the U19s and U20s.
