Southampton are being linked with Wolfsburg midfielder Diego.

The Mirror says Southampton target Diego has opened the door for a move to St Mary's by ruling out returning to old club Atletico Madrid.

Wolfsburg midfielder Diego, 28, is scheduled to be out of contract in the summer.

Diego, who spent the 2011-12 season in Madrid on loan, said, "It is impossible for me to return to Atletico in January."
