Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl wanted to sign defender Marc Guehi last summer.

The Saints were in the market for a new defender in the summer of 2021, with Jannik Vestergaard pushing for an exit that eventually came to Leicester City.

While the Saints did sign Lycano from Torino, it appears Crystal Palace and ex-Chelsea star Guehi was Hasenhuttl's prime target.

The Athletic reports that Hasenhuttl was a huge admirer of Guehi, but a move was not possible at the time.

The 22-year-old was outstanding for Palace as they nicked a 1-0 win over the Saints in the Premier League this past weekend.

Guehi did sign for Palace that summer for £20 million, which was likely out of Southampton's price range.
