Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier did not hold back in his assessment of the club's season.
The Saints are officially relegated from the Premier League and will play Championship football next season.
While the St. Mary's Stadium side were bottom of the table for months, fans had consistently hoped for a revival to move them clear of danger.
“Sad to see what's happened to my team this season," Le Tissier shared on his Twitter account.
"So much money invested (140 million-ish) yet so little return.
"I've never witnessed such a gutless, lazy and passionless performance from a relegation-threatened team in all my life, that squad should hang their heads in shame."
He then added: “It's going to need a huge shift in mentality and a manager able to instil confidence in the young players but if we can do those things then no reason why we can't come straight back up next season."
