Southampton defender Vestergaard: Football a rush; I need the fix

Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard has explained why football is so special to him.

The Dane admits he loves being a pro footballer.

He told Politiken: "It's a rush. One thing is the many big stadiums and crowds of tens of thousands of fans after a win, but there's also just something about the whole psychology of a match. We go into it under great pressure.

"And then we are 11 players who are fighting such a kind of fun war, and winning it gives tremendous relief. And rest. Recognition, honors, camaraderie. Many things suddenly go up in a higher unit. All in all, it just means there's nothing bigger than winning with his team. That's what I depend on.

"Although it can be tough, I also love the cynicism that is in football. Sometimes it's just black or white. Either you win, or you lose, and it brings about immediate feelings from the players and the fans that reinforce each other.

"It pushes the emotions to the limit from a frustration so deep that it hurts, to a joyfulness so great that I feel it throughout my body. That's why I keep chasing the next fix, no matter how big the pressure."
