Souness favourite for Wigan job

Graeme Souness is clear favourite to be named new manager of Wigan Athletic.

Following yesterday's sacking of Chris Hutchings, two major betting companies suspended all action on the Scot.

Chairman Dave Whelan said in a statement: "My energies will now be fully focused on getting the right man, firstly to stop the decline we have suffered in the last two months or so, and secondly, to take us forward in the future.

"This search will be exhaustive and I will not be commenting on any names or speculation until I have found the man I want."

Wigan's is the fourth managerial vacancy to arise in the Premier League this season following the departures of Jose Mourinho, Sammy Lee and Martin Jol at Chelsea, Bolton and Tottenham respectively.

Assistant boss Frank Barlow, along with Mark Seagraves, will take over as caretaker manager for Sunday's trip to Spurs.
