Liverpool legend Graeme Souness is surprised by Tottenham's treatment of Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian defender, who has struggled for fitness this season, is expected to leave Tottenham at the end of the season with a whole host of clubs queuing for his signature.

Souness told Sky Sports: "I know he had an injury earlier in the season – he's been a bit-part player since then.

"I think it's maybe as much to do with his contractual negotiations as much as anything else because I do like him. I think he's the best one they've got in that position.

"I prefer him to [Davinson] Sanchez who is a young man still learning the game. You've got the finished article in him at 29.

"It's a brave move when you think what's at stake. I think just bite the bullet, accept he's going to leave but make the best of him while he's around the place."
