Solskjaer explains Man Utd call for son of a gun Charlie Wellens

The son of Manchester United midfielder Richie Wellens trained with the senior squad today.

United sprung a surprise when they included Charlie Wellens in their first-team training squad ahead of facing FK Astana in the Europa League.

Wellens is a central midfielder who signed a scholarship with United this summer after impressing in the club's academy system.

Like his father, Richie Wellens, both operate in the midfield and it is in this position the 16-year-old has played the majority of his minutes for the youth team.

Salford-born Wellens was one of 11 new faces to have been promoted to the Neil Ryan's youth team side for the current season.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained: "It is what we do at this club. We drop them in, give them a little taste for it. I know his dad from when he played and we now he is a very good footballer. It is just one of these little drips to make them players."
