Shilton: Birmingham keeper Hart has World Cup chance

England legend Peter Shilton says Birmingham City goalkeeper Joe Hart has a great chance of making the World Cup squad.

The on-loan Manchester City keeper isn't there yet, warns Shilts, but he could be if he maintains his current form.

"It has benefited Hart moving from Manchester City to Birmingham on a season's loan," Shilton told the Daily Express.

"He has got one cap for England, half a game as I remember, so he has had a look at what it's like.

"But the World Cup - there is nothing like it. You've got the best of the very best there and suddenly to be part of that is a wonderful experience.

"I got a look at it when the World Cup was at altitude in Mexico and Sir Alf Ramsey took a fourth keeper to the preparation camp in case anyone was affected and then became ill.

"I was close to the same age as Hart is now so I know how it would benefit him. I didn't get a World Cup call-up with Gordon Banks, Peter Bonetti and Alex Stepney being the three senior keepers, but I made my England debut at 21 the following season against East Germany.

"England will take three goalkeepers this time and I would not predict at this point that Hart will be one of them.

"There are two things that have got to happen. Something has got to happen to the keepers in front of him, loss of form or injury and, most importantly, Hart has to keep playing at this consistent high level. He has set himself a high standard in the past few weeks and he has to prove that he can maintain it."
