Sherwood says Spurs future found in their academy

Tim Sherwood feels Tottenham's future can be found in the academy.

The manager has great belief in the club's young players.

"If you look at teams who have historically been successful, many of them have had a core of home-grown players running through their team.

"The most successful team over recent years has been Manchester United, and we all saw the group of players that were brought into their first team through the academy. Now, Liverpool are going so well, and it's no surprise that Steven Gerrard, who has been at the club all his life, is still there.

"The talent is here at Tottenham. It's just about picking these players at the right time and getting in the right players around them, because these youngsters can only be as good as the senior players. Even the influx of foreign players helps bring on the younger ones.

"The players have to be good enough in the first place, so your recruitment has to be good, your development has to be good, and then your manager has to give them the opportunity at the correct time.

"The younger players just have to realise that their time will come. They need to show respect to the senior professionals and they will help bring them along."
