Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has revealed his surprise at Pep Guardiola's comments regarding Kalvin Phillips.
The England midfielder, who went to the World Cup with the Three Lions, was scolded by Guardiola recently.
The Spanish coach intimated that Phillips had returned from the Qatar tournament and subsequent mini holiday overweight and not in shape to train or play.
“I was surprised," Shearer said during punditry for the Man City - Leeds United game at Elland Road on Wednesday.
“I don't know why he said it - I'm guessing there must have been a reason.
“Maybe embarrass him to a certain extent - has he been disappointed in his attitude? Whether he's firing something back at him.
“It hasn't gone as well as one would hope - whether that be for injury or some other reason. There must be a reason."
