Alan Shearer is confident that Wayne Rooney's recent form in a creative midfield role for Manchester United has come at the perfect time for England.
The former Three Lions star suggests that the Paul Scholes-like duties United captain Rooney has been undertaking will only benefit Roy Hodgson's side at Euro2016.
There have been doubts regarding the 30-year-old's starting spot in the England team following the brilliant form of Tottenham's Harry Kane and Leicester City's Jamie Vardy but Shearer feels adding this string to his bow will be a godsend for Rooney's international career.
"The way Wayne Rooney has been reinvented as a midfielder could not have come at a better time for England," Shearer wrote for The Sun after Sunday's 1-1 draw between the Red Devils and league leaders Leicester.
"Against Leicester, Rooney flourished in his new role — just like he did in the 2-1 FA Cup semi-final win over Everton last week.
"And boss Louis van Gaal might have inadvertently solved what would have been a tricky conundrum for Roy Hodgson.
"There is no doubt he will be in the squad for Euro 2016 and, as skipper, will almost certainly start.
"Rooney revealed last week how he used to study Paul Scholes because he always knew he would end up playing in a similar position.
"And the way the United captain sprays the ball around shows there are already similarities there with Scholes.
"And it looks like United and England are still going to have a top-class player in Rooney for many more years to come."
